Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary
Located far enough off the Georgia shore to be just out of the way, and deep enough to be inaccessible to snorkelers, is found a true underwater treasure: Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary.
“Every time I dive at Gray’s Reef, I see something that I’ve never seen before,” said Deputy Superintendent and Research Coordinator Greg McFall, who has dived hundreds of times in the sanctuary. Added McFall, “Gray’s Reef is never the same place twice,” because of the frequent changes brought to the sanctuary by the changing of the seasons from an annual perspective and the currents which switch twice daily on shorter time scale. The sanctuary also sits near the confluence of the cold Labrador Current coming south from New England and warm Gulf Stream waters flowing north from the tropics. In addition, the sanctuary sits at the transition point between the inner and middle continental shelf. All these attributes together are part of what makes This constant interaction between temperate and tropical influences makes Gray’s Reef such a dynamic and a constantly-changing place.

Text and Photographs by Joe Porter and Rich Taylor
A few years ago I was diving with a group of people on a wreck off the coast of Myrtle Beach, commonly referred to as the “Civil War” wreck. Among the group of divers on board was a videographer named Rich Taylor, who, after introducing himself, asked if I had ever heard of the wreck of the Philadelphia off the coast of Cape Romain, South Carolina. I had not heard about the shipwreck before, but my interest immediately piqued when he said it was loaded with many Confederate cannons. Rich knew the person who had received ownership of the wreck in admiralty court and offered to set up a meeting and a possible dive on the wreck.

Introduction: Covered in sea fans, soft corals of yellow and green, and sponges, the United Caribbean is now host to thousands of critters and fish. The Caribbean is one of the wrecks in the wreck triangle, including the Sea Emperor and the Noulla Express. Because of the close proximity to two other wrecks and a reef, it populated very quickly. Many of the same marine residents that occupy the United Caribbean can be seen on the Sea Emperor. Amberjack, snapper, grunts and other fish are common. The wreck moved slightly and sustained some damage during hurricane Wilma.
